Jewellery Care Guide
At Qala, every piece is made with real, natural gemstones — and like anything precious, a little care goes a long way in keeping them beautiful for years to come.
General Care
Put your jewellery on last, after applying perfume, lotion, and makeup, and take it off first before showering, swimming, exercising, or sleeping. Avoid contact with chemicals, including chlorine, household cleaners, and hairspray, as these can dull metal and damage gemstones over time. Remove jewellery before activities involving heavy movement or impact, such as gardening, sports, or housework, to prevent scratches or loosened settings.
Cleaning
Clean your jewellery gently using a soft, lint-free cloth after each wear to remove oils and residue. For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a mild soap, gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush, and pat dry — but always check the specific care notes for your gemstone first, as not all stones can be cleaned this way. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners at home, as they can damage certain stones, loosen settings, or worsen existing fractures.
Caring for Specific Gemstones
Diamonds are the hardest natural material, but can still chip if struck at the wrong angle — clean with mild soap and warm water, and avoid harsh scrubbing near the setting. Emeralds, rubies, and sapphires are often treated to enhance clarity, so avoid soaking them and stick to a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Pearls and opals are soft and porous, so keep them away from perfumes, chemicals, and direct sunlight, and wipe them with a damp cloth only — never soak them. Semi-precious and softer stones (turquoise, coral, moonstone, etc.) should be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth only, avoiding water exposure where possible.
Storage
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratching between pieces. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity, which can affect both metal and gemstone color over time. For pieces you don't wear often, store them flat rather than hanging, to avoid strain on clasps and settings.
